The Evidence. A large-scale field experiment in 214 stores of a German perfumery chain examined what happens when products are relocated from regular shelf positions to prominent in-store displays such as aisle ends or checkout zones. The results were remarkable:

  • Sales increases ranged from 80% up to 478%, depending on product type and placement.
  • On average, relocated products generated an additional €217.69 in weekly sales per store.
  • Importantly, these uplifts were achieved without price reductions, demonstrating that visibility and placement alone can dramatically influence buying behavior.
